Checking out the Lollipop Shoppe's first and only album "Just Colour" was first surprising and then a bit disappointing. The best track on this album is indeed "Underground Railroad". It's a very strong song, a bit dark and maybe even acherontic. A hint of oriental melodies combined with bassy Jefferson Airplane sound and garagy trashing drums and voices. It's just great!

The Burbank, California-based Alshire label was best known for it's cheapo international music (eg. The Sounds Of Spain, The Tijuana Sound, Hawaiian Paradise) and 101 String MOR collections. In pursuit of profit rather than content, 1967 saw the label shell out some cash to have anonymous studio musicians write and record a series of psych-oriented instrumentals. Slapping a pseudo-trippy cover on the results (ignore the dazed long haired teens pictured on the cover since they certainly had nothing to do with the set), the cleverly titled The Animated Egg proved surprising accomplished. With little at stake, the anonymous band (no performing or writing credits are provided), roared through an all-instrumental set; material such as A Love Built On Sand, I Said, She Said, Ah Cid and Sock It My Way are heavy on fuzz, feedback and swirling organ. Elsewhere, Sippin' An Trippin' offered up a nifty slice of Byrds-styled jangle rock, while Tomorrow was a blatant rip off of The Spencer Davis Group's Gimme Some Lovin'. (~Fuzz, Acid & Flowers)

I was discovering Sky Picnic at Dr. Schluss' Garage Of Psychedelic Obscurities.Their sound fascinated me the first time I heared it. The melodies and effects remind me very much of the early Pink Folyd recordings. Until Nasoni Records from Berlin re-reased their 2010 debut "Farther In This Fairy Tale" I guess, they were a kind an unknown band. Did already someone suggested them to play at the Austin Psych Fest or at the Burg Herzberg Festival? Would become a great act I think!

Merrell Fankhauser is mainly known from his work on Fapardokly debut and his recordings with the group MU. Since 1973 he had been living at Maui Island, Hawaï. Merrell: "After Mu broke up I went solo and moved deeper into the Maui rainforest, to study the Lost Continent and ancient Hawaiian history, that in itself is a mystical experience. Living 25 miles out in the jungle next to a free flowing stream by a waterfall can be very enlightening. When you don't have electricity or TV and you hear all the sounds of nature with no man made sound to pollute your mind you become aware and inspired in a new way. I was living with my girlfriend, violinist Mary Lee, and we stayed pretty much to a vegetarian diet, I did eat quite a bit of fresh fish, as it is so good in Hawaii. We played many places as a duo and had a steady gig at a club in Kahului for about 6 months."

I actually saw this band live at 1601 W Evans (The Family Dog) in Denver sometime in '67. They were more of a Jefferson Airplane style band than Byrds. Female singer, lots of jangly guitars with folk-style harmonies. Live they were pretty good, certainly better than the production on this recording. Didn't get much airplay locally and definitely not nationally.I think (not sure) they were originally from Colorado, went to CA, made 1 record (a single), then disappeared. ~by davequ

"It was a magical time for music, the Bow Street Runners were in high school, following that Rock’n’Roll dream. The music was great — Doors, Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Beatles — George, Steve and I would practice in George’s garage and on Saturday and on Saturday nights play the YMCA, the Skating Rink and the Teen Club (remember those?). After we graduated we played night clubs from Jacksonville, Florida to Washington, D.C. for a few years, what we used to call the “Chitlin’ Circuit.” Eventually we got to play concert openers for Strawberry Alarm Clock, Big Brother and the Holding Co., Blood Rock, Chubby Checker, Percy Sledge and bunch more . . . As time went on the Rock’n’Roll dream faded, Steve and George went to college and I continued to play music full time, but now it was jazz.In 1981 I met keyboardist David Guy. We performed throughout North Carolina for the next 10 years doing anything we had to do to make money making music. When George and Steve moved back to Fayetteville in the early nineties, the Bow Street Runners had a reunion — this time in Steve’s garage. He played as a session-musician and did every sucking job he could get. Well, he played for the Hermint's Hermint's and the Kinks in studio, but it looks like that was only a job for him, nothing a idealist would be happy with. So it came that he even played 9 years for James Last, what is really strange while thinking back of those three first Sitar-Psych LP's. Anyway, this song is just a damn good piece of Acid Folk, enjoy!

This song is like the never ending ecstasy from "8 Miles High" followed by some wah-ing psyh-pop to fade out at least.

This track really grooves and is ffor now the most psychedelic track I have heared by this garage rock band. the organ is played in that mystic style and the way they are using their electric guitars just reminds of the Doors. Nalle is Glasgow based band feat. Hanna Tuulikki. Alongside Chris Hladowski (bouzouki, saz, clarinet et al) and Aby Vulliamy (viola, piano, voice et al) the songs are built around Hanna’s unbridled vocals and guitar playing, with occasional sojourns on recorder and Finnish kantele. Recent recordings have also seen Nalle expand to include Ben Reynolds on harmonica and double bass, Raymond MacDonald on sax, Peter Nicholson on double bass and Alex Neilson on Drums. The music draws on a whole gamut of musical traditions, weaving instrumental tapestries around hypnotic, almost ballad-like vocal narratives, cultivating a deeply personal and idiosyncratic approach that outweighs the sum of its parts.

Hanna Tuulikki and Chris Hladowski, who are both playing in a the UK band "the Family Elan", will delight us with a magic Incredible String Band-like track for an upcomming psychedelic compilation on Merlins Nose Records.

One of the classic psych singles to come out of Florida was 'Anxious Color' by The Painted Faces. They were short lived but left behind some fine singles. Their first 45 was released locally on Qualicon. This coupled the moody folk rock lament 'Things We See' with 'I Want You'... The former turning up again as the flip to the Manhattan release.

'Anxious Color' is where it's at though with raga sounding guitar leads giving the song a psychedelic sound. According to the liners of the Distortion compilation this 45 was a big hit in South West Florida, hitting number 1 on some stations. It even got extensive airplay on Los Angeles stations making the Top 10. This was probably due to their Mike Curb connections. (~ Flower Bomb Songs)

Julian Laxton (lead guitar), Art de Villiers (acoustic guitar), Bob Hill (bass), Werner Krupski (keyboards), Francesco (fiddle), Ivor Back (drums), Rory Blackwell (tambourine) helped them out, so they had a nice band together. to categorize their music, I would propose to call it droney acid folk. Acyutananda Swami is an American sannyasi, who left his homeland at the age of 16 years and has been living in India since the last 10 years studying the spiritual culture and music of India. He is world renowned for his masterful singing of Bengali Vaisnava folk songs and playing on mrdanga (clay drum, unique to Bengal).
The recordings on this LP were taken in Mayapura, India, and we beg the listeners to excuse the obvious shortcomings due to circumstances beyond our control. This record has been produced especially with the idea of helping the needy people of Bengal by sending the profits above the cost of actual production to our international center in Mayapura, India (Bengal), where thousands of people are fed each day from contributions coming through the sales of this record. The track is awaiting you in really nice quality, not like all the vinyl rips, that are circulating here araound, ... I mean, they are better than nothing, but with this title as example, you know, what I mean ;)... the guitar riffs are giving a lot of rythm, the voice, surrounds it and the backchor for the refrain still makes it more psychedelic: the floating feeling. Some of their tracks can be found on the Mindrocker, the Acid Visions and the Teenage Shutdown Vol. 10. On the bands lifetime, they only released on single "Enough of What I Need / Hate". William Ash (guitar) later went to The Argyles and The Children (1968, Rebirth), where members from the 13th Floor Elevators played after they disbanded in 1968. The Golden Dawn was also a band, where the Rubayyat sourced their members from.

Linda Pierre King was a folk-rock singer from Houstan,Texas.Eight of her recordings are featured on The Heartbeats & Added Texas Girls of the 60s/We had the Beat compilation. She moved to New York and frequented the famous beatnik hangout, Beanie Baby's Java Hut. The "king of barbershop" Norm Wooster fell in love with her singing and caused a musical transformation within him. She was also a follower of the individualist philosopher Ayn Rand. The Outcasts, who backed her on this organ-driven track, are not the legendary 1523 Blair band.

well, the cover is an imagination of love, peace, incense and pot. The soft psychedelic sound of the album really fits in. this song is the best one from this (his first) LP and a bit different from the rest, lets say, more garage-psych like. the rest of the album has nice playing on the instrument but very poor vocal quality. also the mixing could had done better than it is. Maybe a remastered Re-Issue from the original reels could fix that so I would rate the album with 4/5, not with 3/5 stars.

If the Doors & Kennelmus had a baby, the Strangers Family Band is their love child!

At seven tracks this EP never wears out welcome, nor-just like a good Stranger, overstays. From the mood-setting/changing opener "Enochian", (well, it would be an opener wouldn't it?), we know we're entering another world. Sound creating a travel ticket. Perfectly segueing into "Girl I've Been Taken," from all sides of the spectrum-in my Sennheisers, this reminds me substantially of those 70s desert-dwelling, peyote-munching psychsters Kennelmus. That's a compliment where I come from.Stylistically, this track also seems to lean more on the early 70s period of psychedelic music.

Track 3, "Wooden Hands", further bids you to come into their funhouse mirror world o' weird. A Music Hall romp with horn-backed chorus.

Track 4, "No One Sees Her", maintains the vibe of the prior tack, set up nicely by a small-stringed instrument-ukelele? Mandolin? and shuffles along right past the tilt-o-whirl, a la The Seeds "Nobody Spoil My Fun."

"Strange Transmission" should be familiar to regular readers of this blog for its inclusion on this year's Summer Solstice, Volume II compilation. Opening with SITAR (!), this is pure Doorsian wobble, a long-lost companion and heir to "The End." At seven minutes it's also in the right proportion, too.

"Tangerine", to these ears wouldn't sound outta' place-at all, on the Brian Jonestown Massacre's albums, say circa Methodrone. Complete with Anton-like affected Engle-accented vocals.

The EP ends with "Beware The Autumn People", a trip into an alterniverse where the only song anyone's ever heard is "Soul Kitchen"! Yet these guys manage to somehow break the stranglehold. A slow-burning center to propel it and a swagger which demands attention from your third eye.

I'll stand by my assertion, made earlier, these guys are a product of a Doors-Kennelmus tryst, made one night out near the old prison town of Yuma, a bag of peyote being passed around, and after enough digestion the guitars and percussion come out as a crescent moon slowly rises overhead...those sounds? They entered the Noosphere and were caught in transmission many moons later by a group of guys trying. Trying. As long as they're doing so I'll keep buying the string of tickets from the barker...

Los Mac's is one of the very rare psychedelic groups from the 60's in Chile. Some weeks ago I read an interview with the group where the band leader, I think, talkes about all that crappy studio equipment, they had for their first 2 albums, that mostly contained cover version. For their third album "Kaleidoscope Men" they had better conditions. At that time they started to record their own songs, wich sounds much better and had a really fine kind of psychedelic in it (the same for the last album). This Song is taken from Los Mac's "Kaleidoscope Men" (released 1967). This LP was originally recorded in 1973, and it was a tragedy that it never got released. It was a classic psychedelic-folk recording with the artist Perry Leopold at his very peak of creativity. Incredibly the originally tapes were reused after the studio was sold and then a few mix down tapes were scavenged to put this LP (and CD) together by Gear Fab Records.

Leopold's voice is confident and smooth as silk, which lends an airy dreamy ambiance to the compositions. The combination of richly textured instruments such as the flute, bassoon, and cello serves as the perfect compliment to Leopold's vocal style and gentle and warm guitar playing. You may be reminded of some other great groups of the past when you hear this album. CSN&Y comes to mind for their heavenly harmonies and beautiful memorable folk-rock tunes. Fans of The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield may find something to key in on while listening to this as well.

This is one of the finest disregarded recordings that I have ever heard. Thanks to Gear Fab to changing the course of history, and for all of their hard work in keeping the spirit of this music alive. And above all, thanks to the creator Perry Leopold for giving us a much needed blast from the past to credit him with the importance and credibility of his artistry.

Jay Siegal of The Tokens produced the first and only LP they made. the band real name is "The Fabulous Four", but the labels and manager changed their name several times, here they changed it to "The Next Exit". On garagehangover.com and rockkansas.com you can read a bit about the whole story of this great band :). This song has groovy overdubbed singing. Psychedelic pop with a touch acid.

"In 1967 the group landed a great opportunity to travel New York to record "I'm the Only One" and "Break Away" as the Next Exit for Warner Bros, produced by the Tokens. "Break Away" was written by Stephen Friedland (aka Brute Force) and Paul Kahan, and is well-crafted psychedelic pop." ~ garagehangover.com

Here are comming some words from the guitarist of this band, about the song:

Bob Theen: This song was recorded in NY in 1967, produced by The Tokens. It was supposed to be the title song for a movie that was released that next year in 1968 called “Butterflies Are Free’ The movie did come out it ‘68 but for some reason unknown to us our recording was not chosen. The song "I'm The Only One" was in the movie but only one short verse was sung by one of the stars on an acoustic. Darn the luck!! The other side of this is "Breakaway".

Our version of the song was released in the spring of 1968 and got some air play here in K.C. MO. Don't know about anywhere else. But evidently it wasn't a smash hit.

I still have a letter from Hank and Jay asking us to return to NY for some more recordings but for some reason at the time the trip was too far. I still wonder to this day why we didn't go. I think it had something to do with our families, wives, babies and that sort of thing.

This is the B-side of "Cloudy." This song was described as a "novelty" for this band, although it stands up incredibly well on it's own merit. Great harmonies. The Band was formed in 1964. They were from Riverside, California. They released some LP's and 45's.

released 1969 on the selftitled album "It's A Beautiful Day". But the single "Bulgaria / Aquarian Dream" was rleased 1968. The band was founded in San Francisco 2 years before, 1967. The single "Bulgaria" was mis-titled by their manager Matthew Katz. The song (which also appeared on the Pipe Dream comp) is called "Love For You" (which is obvious when you listen to it!). The flipside, although good, is nothing to do with the IABD band at all, and was more Matthew Katz "magaing".
